Introduction:

Bionics is the branch of science dedicated to the studying of the characteristics, structure or functions of bio-systems for innovations in developing new technology, it is also known as “Biomimicry” or “Biomimetics”. Since 1960s, bionics has developed quickly and applied widely in various fields of science and technology. With an emphasis on the scientific basis of various processes or phenomena in nature, this course aims to introduce to the students the various inspirations which human beings acquired from nature, the methodology, the major applications, and the advancements of bionics. Students will learn on-line in form of lectures, videos, demonstrations, quizzes, discussions, and also gain hands-on experience through participating in worksheets and self-exploratory activities.

仿生学又称为「模拟生物学」或「生物模仿学」,是一门研究生物系统的特质、结构及功能原理的科学,主要用以研发各种创新科技。自六十年代开始,仿生学的迅速发展使其在各个科学及技术范畴中渐渐普及。本课程旨在以各种科学现象或过程的原理为基础,在网上通过讲解、视频、示范、测验、及讨论等内容介绍仿生学的原理及仿生学在各方面的应用。学生亦可通过工作纸及在家实验等活动,亲身了解仿生学的基本原理。

Learning outcomes:   Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:
  1. Understand the scope of bionics and its applications in various fields;
  2. Understand and appreciate the processes of how insights from nature are studied and transformed into technology to solve various technical problems;
  3. Appreciate the characteristics, complexities and adaptiveness of materials built by nature, and how they can tackle the challenges encountered in the course of evolution;
  4. Evaluate critically the superiority of designs made by nature over that by humans;
  5. Have a thorough understanding of the principles of animal flight;
  6. Discuss, develop and apply concepts and principles in solving a range of problems encountered in designing and constructing a high-performance glider plane.
