# This course is offered face-to-face lessons at CUHK campus. It may switch to online teaching in accordance with the pandemic development and the policy of the university.

 

Introduction:

This course presents an integrated scientific introduction to our climate system, focusing on the physics and chemistry of the atmosphere and ocean. The course applies basic scientific and mathematical principles to explain the history, current state and future projections of weather and climate, natural hazards, human-induced climate change, as well as their impacts on natural ecosystems and human society. Students will learn to build a simple climate model using computer software.

本课程综合介绍我们的气候系统,重点讨论大气层与海洋的物理和化学。课程利用基本科学和数学原理来解释天气及气候的历史、现状和未来预测,探讨在人为影响下所构成的自然灾害及全球气候变化,及其对自然生态和人类社会的影响。学生亦会运用电脑程式来学习建构简单的气候模型。

Learning outcomes:   This course will contribute to the understanding of the dynamics of the climate system, specifically the atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere and solid earth, as well as their interactions.
  Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:
  1. explain how fundamental physical and chemical principles govern specific climate system processes;
  2. participate knowledgeably and intelligently in discussions of public policy related to global climate change and sustainable development;
  3. apply basic computer skills to understand and predict trends of the climate system.
