Gain an overview of the basic concepts of Traditional Chinese Medicine through this online course offered in English by CUSCS in collaboration with School of Continuing Studies, University of Toronto (U of T SCS).

The course helps participants make more informed and intelligent choices about Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). This examination of the philosophy and approaches to TCM will include discussion and case studies of methods in TCM diagnosis and treatment. Through online presentations, participants will learn about the various applications of TCM to the maintenance of overall health, in integration with mainstream medicine.

The course will comprise eight video presentations by both instructors from CUSCS and U of T SCS, and an online discussion board moderated by both instructors.

1. The holistic characteristics and basic principles of TCM
2. The basic concepts of TCM herbal medicine and acupuncture treatments
3. Choices concerning TCM treatment based on individual health conditions
4. Health maintenance through TCM
5. The classification of diagnoses and illnesses as made by TCM practitioners

Course Outline

1. The philosophy and the practice model of TCM
2. The concepts of body structure and function in TCM
3. Classification of disease-causing factors in TCM
4. Diagnostic methods in TCM
5. TCM syndrome differentiation in TCM
6. Treatment with Chinese herbal medicine treatment
7. TCM acupuncture treatment
8. TCM health maintenance and life cultivation.

Course Duration

Around 10 Weeks


This course does not provide assignments. Students who complete at least 70% of online chapters can apply for a “Certificate of Attendance” within one year upon completion of the course. An administration fee of HK$50 will be charged on every request.
